YOUNG MASTERS (SD/HD Video, 42mins., 2010)
SYNOPSIS:

YOUNG MASTERS, a documentary by award-winning filmmaker Punam Kumar Gill, follows the intense journey of three Canadian skill champions who, with Olympic-sized passion, train and compete for the gold medal at the 40th WorldSkills Competition.
Although destined for the podium as masters in their respective trades of autobody repair, painting, and IT, these young people reveal how they are often treated like second-class citizens because of their vocation. In a society that values the head over the hands, university over college, and white collar over blue, can these young people also prove to be masters of their own futures?

Four years in the making, the film was originally conceived when Calgary won the bid to host the 40th WorldSkills Competition. The filmmaker was then working as Advisor to the President of the host organization, and left this position to pursue her artistic dreams. Trading in her business suit and her knowledge-based career, she was inspired by the spirit of the WorldSkills Competition, and like her subjects in the film, gained skilled employment in a craft, and attempted to master her own future.
